Are Essential Oils Effective Candida Treatment?

Posted in Candida on March 29th, 2007

Although candida treatment for men is typically the same as it is for women, it’s imperative that candida sufferers know there are other remedies for infections aside from topical creams.  For instance, there are essential oils that can be used to effectively treat different forms of candida infections.

Essential oil is created from natural substances (typically plants and flowers).  Essential oils have been used for centuries for perfume, aromatherapy, and for their healing properties.    Essential oils are available at local health and nutrition stores; however, you will find that there are many to choose from, and not all are considered effective for treating candida.

The following are the essential oils used as effective candida treatment:

Tea Tree Oil – This essential oil is comprised of antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal properties.  It is primarily for external use, and is applied as a topical ointment for small wounds.  It is considered effective treatment for a number of candida infections including athlete’s foot, acne, and other fungal infections present on the skin.

Tea tree oil is considered a safe candida treatment for most people.  However, although rare, skin irritation or rash may occur.  Furthermore, tea tree oil is not recommended for pregnant women.

Eucalyptus – This essential oil provides excellent support to the immune system, and can kill most staphylococcus bacteria, which is a bacterium that can combine with candida to create infections such as eczema.  Eucaplytus provides the body with a cooling effect.  It can be used topically to treat candida infections and is sometimes used in small amounts for oral supplements.

Eucalyptus is considered a safe external treatment.  However, it can be extremely toxic if ingested.  This is why only a small amount of eucalyptus is found in supplements.  You should never ingest eucalyptus without first seeking the advice of a health care provider.

Rose Geranium oil– This oil has an antibacterial effect that has proven to be exceptionally effective as a candida treatment because of its ester content.  It is an exceptional skin care product that promotes hygiene, and can be used topically as an antiseptic for fungal infections such as athlete’s foot.  What makes rose geranium oil so unique is geranium can eliminate yeast without affecting natural bacterial flora.  When ingested, geranium also helps stimulate liver and pancreas function, and can also sooth symptoms of breast pain in women during menses when applied topically.

This essential oil is considered safe to use and may only cause minor side effects such as skin irritation for those with sensitive skin.  However, geranium oil is not recommended for pregnant women as it is known to balance the hormonal system.

Oregano Oil – This oil is recognized for its aggressive antifungal properties and can effectively take care of stubborn candida fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, nail fungus and fungal infections of the scalp.  Oregano oil can be used both internally and externally as a candida treatment.

Oregano oil also as anti-inflammatory properties and can effectively relieve pain when applied topically, as it penetrates deep into damaged skin to provide relief.  This oil is considered safe and side effects are extremely rare.  Oreagano oil can cause a skin irritation or rash when applied topically in those who are allergic or have sensitive skin.

Two other essential oils that are recognized for their antifungal properties and may be effective at treating candida include patchouli and myrrh.
Before taking essential oils to treat candida infections, you should consult your health care provider to make sure the oils you are considering are safe for you to take.  This is especially true if you are pregnant or have any current or pre-existing health problems.  In addition, you should follow all directions on products, and speak to a professional herbalist to find out what the best methods for applying and ingesting these oils are for candida treatment.

What Are the Yeast Infection Symptoms in a Man?

Posted in Candida on March 22nd, 2007

Just as it is possible for a baby to have a yeast infection, so is it possible for yeast infection symptom in man to exist.  Many people are under the impression that only women can experience a yeast infection in their genital region.  Although it is true that women are far more likely to develop these yeast infections, thinking a man cannot develop a genital yeast infection is a misconception that needs to be dispelled.

Men, like women have candida present in their gut.  A candida overgrowth, better known as candidasis, is simply the fancy way of saying yeast infection. For instance, oral thrush, and many skin rashes and infections such as athlete’s foot are all forms of yeast infections that are linked to candida.  Thus, genital yeast infections are an infection caused by candida overgrowth and other contributing factors.

What are the other causes aside from candida?  Unlike oral thrush yeast infection symptom in man – often caused by HIV – A yeast infection that affects the genital region, known as a penile yeast infection, can be caused by different factors.  Some of these factors may include the following –

Sexual transmission – If a man has unprotected sex with a woman, who has a vaginal yeast infection, candida can be transmitted from her to him through direct contact, just like a sexually transmitted disease.  Although this isn’t entirely a common occurrence, it can and does happen more frequently than one would think.

Antibiotics – It is really uncommon for a penile yeast infection symptom in man to develop from antibiotics, but it is not impossible.  Antibiotics are considered candida friendly because they destroy good bacteria and bad bacteria, creating an imbalance in gut flora which can result in candida overgrowth and lead to infection.

Diabetes – Men who have diabetes are at a greater risk of developing yeast infections due to the fact that they have elevated sugar levels in their urine.

What are the symptoms?  The following are some of the penile yeast infection symptom in man to look for:
• Irritation and soreness present in the head of the penis, often accompanied by itchiness.
• The head of the penis may appear red and develop small blisters
• Presence of discharge that appears thick and white
• Little red itchy bumps may appear on the penis shaft or surrounding genital area if a yeast infection is left untreated.

If a man is experiencing these symptoms, it is important that he visit his doctor to receive a proper diagnosis.  There are two main reasons why a professional diagnosis is important –
1. If a man does not treat a yeast infection, he can pass it back to his partner, and she can continue to pass it back to him.  Both sexual partners should be treated to eradicate the threat of infection.
2. Although a man may think he is suffering a yeast infection, in actuality his symptoms may be the cause of an entirely different medical condition- genital herpes.  Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that is characterized by little itchy bumps, and is a chronic disease that can not be treated with the same remedies as a yeast infection.

Hence, always have symptoms investigated by a health care provider to be sure, and refrain from self-diagnosis.

How is a penile yeast infection symptom in man treated?  In most cases it is treated with the same topical cream prescribed to women with vaginal yeast infections.  These creams are available without a doctor’s prescription at your local pharmacy.  Just remember, that if you’ve never experienced a penile yeast infection before, it’s a good idea to visit your doctor, get checked out, and take his treatment advice to experience effective relief.

Yeast Infections and Your Baby- What you should know today

Posted in Candida on March 15th, 2007

A baby yeast infection caused by candidasis is not something that can simply be cured with a food journal and cookbook.  Babies can’t tell you what foods aggravate their symptoms so you need to take a different approach.

Believe it or not, but even babies can be affected by candida overgrowth and can experience yeast infections.  The most common yeast infections suffered by babies is diaper dermatitis (better known as diaper rash) and oral (mouth) thrush.  In many cases, a baby can experience both of these candida infections at the same time.

How do you know if your child has a yeast infection caused by candida?  The following are symptoms of a baby yeast infection you should watch for:

Diaper Dermatitis symptoms - Deep red rash that looks shiny and has satellite lesions.  The rash typically appears in the creases or folds of the thighs located in the diaper area and spreads.

Oral Thrush symptoms - Gray-white coating that is present on the tongue, gums and inside cheeks.  This coating will not be easy to wipe off.  In rare cases, oral thrush may be severe and the baby may find sucking painful.

What causes these baby yeast infections?  Yeast infections caused by candida start with a build up of fungus in the intestines.  Yeast infections develop in warm, moist environments where bacteria can thrive.  For a baby, the best environment for growing bacteria is the diaper and the mouth.   This overgrowth of fungus, along with other factors, may lead to diaper rash or oral thrush.

Causes of diaper dermatitis - Diaper rash is primarily caused by a wet or soiled diaper.  Skin can be irritated by urine or stool.  Irritation can also occur from diarrhea which can be highly acidic and burn the skin.  The rash can also result from tightly fitted, air-tight plastic pants which prevent moisture from evaporating.

Causes of oral thrush – Oral thrush typically occurs in babies who are still in diapers.  It can result from taking antibiotics to treat another infection, and can occur if the baby has excessive candida albicans in their system; they have damaged skin; or if there is a yeast infection present on the mother’s nipples.

Diagnosis and treatment - If you suspect a baby yeast infection, take your child to his/her pediatrician so the infection can be properly diagnosed.  Once diagnosed, treatment will be prescribed based on what the doctor deems best for your child.  Factors that determine treatment may include the age of your child, the severity of the infection, and if there are any pre-existing medical conditions.

Treatment for diaper dermatitis
• Removing diaper for a few days
• Medicated or anti-inflammatory creams
• Moisture-resistant diaper creams

Treatment for oral thrush
• Antifungal antibiotic that can be applied to skin or taken orally
• Topical cream for the mother’s breast if her nipple is the cause of infection

Take preventative action - You can keep your baby yeast infection free by ensuring the following –
• Change diapers regularly
• Keep the diaper area clean and dry
• Keep diapers off whenever possible
• Do not wash your baby’s skin with soap or other harsh cleaning products
• Properly sanitize soothers and bottle tops by boiling them for approximately 10 minutes to avoid recurrence of oral thrush.

Create a Personal Candida Cook Book and Food Journal

Posted in Candida on March 8th, 2007

A candida cook book is a good idea for anyone who suffers from, or is prone to candida overgrowth.  It is important that a candida sufferer takes every necessary precaution to avoid developing a fungal infection (Candidiasis) in their intestinal tract, mouth, skin, and genitals.  The best way to control a Candida overgrowth is to follow a specific diet that does not encourage the development of bad gut bacteria or yeast.

However, before a candida cook book is started, you first need to create a food journal and carefully analyze your diet and find out which foods trigger candidasis, and those that done.  You can then create an anti-candida diet based on your findings.

There are many foods that can cause an overgrowth in candida such as:
• Sugar in all it’s forms (refined, artificial, natural)
• Yeast food products – bread, pizza dough, breadcrumbs
• Refined grains – foods that are made with white flower (I.E. pasta, bread, cereal
• Smoked and cured food products - processed meat, bacon, sausage, etc.
• Beverages – Caffeinated coffee, tea, soda, beer, liquor, wine etc.
• Fermented food products – pickles, vinegar, soy sauce, etc.
• Dairy products – cheeses, cream, cows milk, etc.
• Peanut and peanut products
• And so on

Knowing what foods are considered safe to eat is just as important as knowing what to eliminate when creating a candida cook book.  This is because, you need to know what food you can use to make healthy recipes you can enjoy and are fungal-free.  Below is a brief list of foods most candida suffers can eat –
• Herbs and mild spices such as garlic
• Fresh vegetables – onions, carrots, cucumber, etc.
• Legumes – peas, beans, etc.
• Dairy - Butter, cottage cheese, yogurt
• Eggs and unprocessed, organic meat
• Oats such as porridge
• Whole grain products – rice, bread, etc.
• Oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, sardines, tuna, etc.
• Eggs
• Beverages – water, fresh fruit juice, herbal teas, fresh vegetable juice, such as pumpkin juice (Note: be careful with vegetable juices, as many of them, especially carrot contain plenty of sugar)

Keep in mind that some of the foods in the above list could aggravate candida symptoms.  This is why it is imperative you create your own person food journal to determine what foods are best for you.  Once you know what foods you can safely incorporate into your diet, you can begin creating you own candidia cook book by finding recipes that have “safe” ingredients.

Where can you find recipes?  You can find recipes in special cooking books for candida in local and online bookstores.  You can also find many recipes online by simply searching for the keyword “candida recipe”.  An example of an excellent online site is Candidadiet. com.

• 3-hole punch so you can print off recipes online and add them to your binder
