Discover the Link Between Candida and Vitamin B12

Posted in Candida on October 25th, 2007

Yeast Infections like Candida Albicans can be sometimes be encouraged if the body is deficient in certain essential nutrients and probiotics.  In this article we look at the link between candida and vitamin b12.

In recent studies it has been found that a person who is deficient in Vitamin B12 can have a weakened immune system

By increasing the intake of Vitamin B12, which is a water soluble vitamin, it can help to restore the effectiveness of the body’s immune response, and make it much more effective.

The intake of Vitamin b12 is vital to maintain healthy nerve cells and support the production of the body’s genetic material.  It also works closely with some of the other b vitamins to control and regulate the formation of red blood cells.

Vitamin B12 also supports the immune system and has been shown to be a “mood” enhancer, helping keep stress levels lower in the body and helping a person deal better with stressful situations.

As Candida often arises because a person’s immune system is not working at full strength, then a person who is deficient in Vitamin B12 may be at an increased risk of developing a yeast infection overgrowth.

Vitamin B12 is also known as known as Cobalamin, and the average healthy adult will have between 2 and 5mg in their body at any time, of which the majority is stored in the liver.  This is also true for most animals, and that is why eating liver is an exceptional way of replenishing the levels of B12 in the body.

Sufferers of Candida are often deficient in a number of key vitamins, minerals and nutrients, including vitamin B12, due to the reduced effectiveness of the digestive process caused by the yeast overgrowth, the this can exacerbate a B12 deficiency over time.

Some of the symptoms of a lack of B12 include:

• An irritated, red and possibly shiny tongue, and a reduced sense of taste.
• A reduced, or altered sense of touch, which can include a reduced ability to detect vibration.
• Headaches.
• Reduced co-ordination, pain and difficulty walking, along with muscle spasms.
• Palpitation, shortness of breath and chest pains

So, it is vital that if you are showing any of these symptoms you seek professional advice.

Unfortunately many of the oral antibiotics we use today can destroy the good bacteria in our stomach which help keep yeast infections such as candida under control.

The link between the immune system and ensuring that there are sufficient levels of vitamin B12 and other b vitamins present in the body is clear.  So, ensure that you are eating the correct foods, namely meat, dairy and eggs, to ensure that your levels of Vitamin B12 are managed.

Reduce your risk of candida and vitamin b12 deficiency through choosing a diet rich in foods that include this essential nutrient.

The Effectiveness of Choosing Chinese Medicine Candida Treatments

Posted in Candida on October 18th, 2007

Often, a Chinese medicine candida diagnosis will only come after the practitioner has considered all your symptoms.  In Chinese medicine the body’s whole wellbeing is considered in the diagnosis, with an attempt to bring the body back into balance.

Normally the strains of Candida (yeast) found in the body inhabit a person’s digestive tract, from mouth to rectum, as well as genitourinary tract.

Unfortunately when this particular form of fungus is allowed to grow it can cause problems for the sufferer.

Although many people will turn to traditional Western medicine in order to treat the fungal overgrowth any continued use of antibiotics can unfortunately in some cases escalate the problem and lead to reoccurring bouts.

That is why more people are turning to Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments in order to help them eliminate Candida overgrowth.

Certainly, there are number herbs and lifestyle changes that would be recommended by a Chinese medicine practitioner which have an overall anti-biotic property, which make them an effective alternative, or complementary medicine, which can help bring the body back into balance.

The herbs and changes suggested in traditional Chinese Medicine usually bring balance by reducing the number of “bad” bacterium, which can encourage the growth of Candida, but still allows the good bacteria in our bodies to remain.

The good bacterium found in the body is essential and among other things it helps suppress yeast infections like Candida.

Usually when you are undergoing treatment by a Chinese Medicine practitioner for Candida they will want to ensure that your body is in balance as they feel an imbalance in your Yin and Yang is often the cause for the many illnesses that people suffer.

One particular way for treating Candida using Chinese Medicine is to prescribe a cleansing therapy, which helps to clear the body of any waste, phlegm and toxins that the practitioner may have noticed.  These are seen as a one of the causes of the Candidiasis overgrowth.

The herbs used in this form of treatment are not there to cleanse the large intestine but rather to help promote the removal of phlegm and toxins. In Chinese Medicine it is important that the phlegm, waste and toxins be removed from the body as they help promote the growth of yeast in the body.

The main types of herbs which are used to help the body of phlegm, waste and toxins include Long Dao Cao (Gentiana), Chuan Lian Zi (Melia), Huo Xiang (Agastachis), Bai Dou Kou (Cardamon), Mu Xiang (Saussarea), Huang Qin (Skullcup), Hung Lian (Coptis) and Huang Bai (Phellodendra).

Once the cleansing stage has been completed, the patient will be moved onto the next stage with is “Tonifying”.

This stage helps to repair the damage caused by conditions such as Candida and restore your body’s balance.

It is also during this stage of the treatment that the practitioner will seek to prevent reoccurrence in the future.  Often, the treatment will include Huang Qi (Astragalus), Dang Shen (Codonopsis), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) and Shan Yao (Dioscorea).

However, there will also be an instruction to reduce the potential of yeast overgrowth through changes in diet by reducing the foods that incorporate yeast growth.

Ensure you consult a qualified TCM practitioner for a personalized diagnosis.

How Effective Are Candida Diets?

Posted in Candida on October 11th, 2007

Many people (depending upon their initial diagnosis) who suffer from Candida overgrowth and follow one of the anti candida diets available can often feel improvements remarkably quickly, some people can see a marked improvement after about 4 weeks.

The purpose of a candida diet is to remove all the foods that feed the candida fungus and help to create an environment in the body that can fight the infection better. In essence, starve the candida and build up the body’s defenses.

There are number of reasons for candida overgrowth occurring, these include a weakened immune system, which is unable to fight the infection, a poor diet, medication that can kill either the friendly bacteria in the gut which suppresses candida growth, or can impact on the immune system directly.

There are other reasons that a candida overgrowth can occur, and it is important the cause of the condition is identified to reduce the risk of reoccurrence.

Also, ensure that your infection is properly diagnosed.  There are a number of ailments that share similar symptoms to candida, and it is important the correct treatment is applied which is specific to your condition.

That being said, here are some of the foods to be eliminated from your food choices when following an anti candida diet.

1.  Sugar and products that contain sugar

It is important that you remove all types of refined sugar from your diet as this directly feeds the yeast infection (Candida) giving it the fuel and environment to grow aggressively.

All sugars should be eliminated, even those that are hidden in other foods. So this would include white and brown sugar as well as honey, maple, corn and rice syrup along with molasses, maple, date, raw and demerrara sugar.

Ensure that you read the labels on all processed foods, as sugar is very often added, even to savory items. Look for terms like sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose and glucose.

There is some debate if fruit should be removed from the diet due to its beneficial nutritional properties.  If you do keep eating fruit, then reduce the amount and also eat only fresh whole fruit, so that the beneficial vitamins and minerals are all present and have not been lost by sitting on a grocer’s shelf or through processing the fruit.

2.  Yeast and foods containing yeast

Foods that contain bakers and brewer’s yeast along with Engevita and Torula, plus any other nutritional yeast should be eliminated from the diet.  This will also mean removing all foods which have yeast in the and which acts as a raising agent such as breads, rolls, buns, muffins and pastries.

Watch out for foods that have yeast within sauces and spreads, like marmite, Bovril and gravy mix.

3.  Fermented products

Vinegar is made using a yeast culture and all foods that either contain yeast, or are created using a fermentation process such as white, red wine, cider and balsamic vinegar need to be eliminated from your diet.

Foods that contain vinegar include mayonnaise, ready made or commercial salad dressings, ketchup and sauces such as Worcestershire, barbecue, steak, shrimp and soy.

Plus you will also need to remove mustards, pickles, pickled vegetables, green olives and all forms of relishes, horseradish, chili sauce and mincemeat as well.

There is also a long list of foods that are perfectly acceptable to eat as part of an anti candida diet.

Although following anti candida diets may sound restrictive, after a period the doctor or nutritionist will usually allow for the slow reintroduction of foods found on the restricted list.

Candida Treatments Reviewed

Posted in Candida on October 4th, 2007

There are a number of different candida treatments available. Each with their own pros and cons, which should be considered before rushing in and adopting them.

The choice of whether to go for natural remedies or use solely traditional Western medicine to treat candida is often debated, and certainly has strong advocates on both sides.

This article does not intend to get involved in these discussions, as its purpose is simply to educate someone with candida and give them the best chance to recover from this yeast infection as swiftly as possible.

Candida treatments prescribed by medical practitioners will generally include anti-fungal medication, such as Miconazole or Clortimazole.

These medications have shown to be effective, but there are also alternatives, which you can purchase over the counter at your local drug store.

In order for the yeast infection it to be treated effectively, there should be a proper diagnosis by a medical professional.  There are other conditions that have similar symptoms to a candida overgrowth and taking medications for the wrong ailment could make matters worse.

One of the best ways of helping to treat Candida naturally is by following a sugar and yeast free diet.

By doing this you are actually preventing the Candida from having access to the basic ingredients which help it to grow.  The quickest approach is often following a candida diet while taking medication.  In this way the candida infection is “starved” while the medication works within the body.

Another way for treating Candida is known as immunotherapy.  This treatment uses anti-genic extracts to help combat the illness caused by the yeast infection.

These types of Candida treatments are much more specialized and are likely to be a little more expensive than the conventional ways of treating this type of infection.

Acupuncture is sometimes used in treating Candida as it is believed to help stimulate the immune system which can then help fight off the effects of the Candida infection.

Another option for you to consider when looking to treat your Candida problem is to adopt a homeopathic approach. The homeopathic approach to Candida treatments focus on cleansing the body and specifically the intestinal tract and digestive system where the Candida yeast likes to live.

None of the approaches mentioned in this article are mutually exclusive.  They can all be used in conjunction with each other to enhance the impact on the candida infection.

What is really important is that you commence any sort of Candida treatments as soon as you have been diagnosed with the problem.

The longer the Candida is given to grow then the more severe the problems relating to this type of infection can be.

In some cases if left unchecked the growth of Candida in the body can lead to further medical complications in other parts of the body especially the organs such as the kidney, heart, livers and brain.  So candida treatments need to be effective and swiftly implemented to ensure speedy recovery.
