How Effective Are Candida Diets?

Many people (depending upon their initial diagnosis) who suffer from Candida overgrowth and follow one of the anti candida diets available can often feel improvements remarkably quickly, some people can see a marked improvement after about 4 weeks.

The purpose of a candida diet is to remove all the foods that feed the candida fungus and help to create an environment in the body that can fight the infection better. In essence, starve the candida and build up the body’s defenses.

There are number of reasons for candida overgrowth occurring, these include a weakened immune system, which is unable to fight the infection, a poor diet, medication that can kill either the friendly bacteria in the gut which suppresses candida growth, or can impact on the immune system directly. 

There are other reasons that a candida overgrowth can occur, and it is important the cause of the condition is identified to reduce the risk of reoccurrence.

Also, ensure that your infection is properly diagnosed.  There are a number of ailments that share similar symptoms to candida, and it is important the correct treatment is applied which is specific to your condition.

That being said, here are some of the foods to be eliminated from your food choices when following an anti candida diet.

1.  Sugar and products that contain sugar

It is important that you remove all types of refined sugar from your diet as this directly feeds the yeast infection (Candida) giving it the fuel and environment to grow aggressively.

All sugars should be eliminated, even those that are hidden in other foods. So this would include white and brown sugar as well as honey, maple, corn and rice syrup along with molasses, maple, date, raw and demerrara sugar.

Ensure that you read the labels on all processed foods, as sugar is very often added, even to savory items. Look for terms like sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose and glucose.

There is some debate if fruit should be removed from the diet due to its beneficial nutritional properties.  If you do keep eating fruit, then reduce the amount and also eat only fresh whole fruit, so that the beneficial vitamins and minerals are all present and have not been lost by sitting on a grocer’s shelf or through processing the fruit. 

2.  Yeast and foods containing yeast

Foods that contain bakers and brewer’s yeast along with Engevita and Torula, plus any other nutritional yeast should be eliminated from the diet.  This will also mean removing all foods which have yeast in the and which acts as a raising agent such as breads, rolls, buns, muffins and pastries. 

Watch out for foods that have yeast within sauces and spreads, like marmite, Bovril and gravy mix.

3.  Fermented products

Vinegar is made using a yeast culture and all foods that either contain yeast, or are created using a fermentation process such as white, red wine, cider and balsamic vinegar need to be eliminated from your diet.

Foods that contain vinegar include mayonnaise, ready made or commercial salad dressings, ketchup and sauces such as Worcestershire, barbecue, steak, shrimp and soy.

Plus you will also need to remove mustards, pickles, pickled vegetables, green olives and all forms of relishes, horseradish, chili sauce and mincemeat as well.

There is also a long list of foods that are perfectly acceptable to eat as part of an anti candida diet.

Although following anti candida diets may sound restrictive, after a period the doctor or nutritionist will usually allow for the slow reintroduction of foods found on the restricted list.
